Traditional Coffee Makers vs. Singe Serve Coffee Makers
Coffee from one cup coffee makers have become so popular in a short span of time thanks to the ”go, go, go” attitude of today. Everybody is so much in a hurry that waiting more than 2 minutes for a cup of coffee is just too long. But on the other hand, the taste buds of people today are much more sophisticated when it comes to coffee that a new breed of coffee drinkers have emerged, the elitists of the coffee world, the Coffee Snobs.
Basically, the coffee world is divided into three kinds of drinkers. We will discuss each type briefly to see where you fall and to know whether using coffee pods (and single serve coffee makers) is for you.
The Coffee Snobs
These are the people who take their coffee seriously. Most of them have an altar to coffee machines and they own at least one high-end espresso maker, a good burr grinder, a steaming wand, a frothing device and maybe their own coffee roaster. Some may even contemplate on buying their own coffee fields, if they don’t have one yet, that is. They can tell where their beans were grown, how the beans were roasted and when you ask them how their coffee tastes, they will describe the taste and aroma to you as if they were professional perfume testers: an earthy tone, a tiny hint of cocoa and a nice caramel finish. The coffee snobs have a really keen sense of smell and taste, they can tell you things about your coffee that can make you go: “really?”
The “Couldn’t care less” Coffee Drinkers
These coffee drinkers could not care less what their coffee taste like. Coffee is coffee. The coffee can be really stale, acidic and reheated countless times and they would not mind. $3 for coffee? The idea is preposterous. Coffee is usually a mug of Nescafe 3-in-1 and really fancy coffee is a cappuccino from Starbucks. French roast? Ridiculous! It all tastes the same.
Coffee Enthusiasts
Many of us fall somewhere in between these two extremes. We appreciate coffee and we can tell good coffee from bad coffee. We know that there are these really exceptional authentic Italian espressos; we know about Arabica beans and the difference between a good old freshly brewed coffee from instant coffee but we are also a long way from identifying subtleties in coffee. We enjoy a cappuccino from Starbucks but we try to not make a habit of $3 –cup because we know we can get a good cup at home for less. We can enjoy a nice authentic Italian brew but we also do not mind a steaming hot cup of instant coffee.
Now that we have classified coffee drinkers albeit a little stereotypical, let us compare pods to traditional coffee.
Espresso Pods vs Traditional Coffee and Traditional Coffee Makers
Quality of drink and preparation
The first thing to consider is the quality of the coffee. The coffee in the pods are pre-measured and protected against MASH (moisture, air, sunlight and heat). Each pod contains exactly the same amount of coffee as in other pods of the same variant. While each cup of coffee comes out tasting the same, the home barista does not have control over the quality of the coffee.
Unless you have already perfected your brewing methods, the single serve coffee makers have one up on traditional coffee. With pods, results are consistent and there will absolutely be no guesswork required. It will be pretty much a tough job spoiling the preparation of coffee from pods.
Please check out our article in coffee pods (Nespresso Capsules and Tassimo Discs) for more details on how coffee pods work.
Convenience
It is easier as well as faster to prepare coffee from pods using single serve coffee machines because you no longer have to grind, tamp etc.
However, if you have guests, it is easier to brew a whole pot rather than brew each drink separately. On the other hand, guests will have fun choosing their own drink as you play barista.
Cost of coffee
Coffee pods cost more than buying coffee beans or coffee grounds. Coffee from pods normally cost around 50 cents to a dollar for a single serving; for those who consume large amounts of coffee, they would usually require two pods in a single serving because one pod only makes about 6oz of coffee. If they drink lattes or cappuccinos, they would require 4 pods as these blended drinks require a coffee pod and a milk pod.
However, drinkers need to consider whether they consume the whole pot of coffee that they brew. Sometimes, half pots of stale coffee are poured down the drain as drinkers are forced to brew several cups even if they are only going to drink one cup.
If you have guests though, a pot of traditional coffee is cheaper compared to several servings of coffee from pods.
Pod Coffee Makers: Waste
The biggest issue of pods is its impact on the environment. Manufacturers of the pods are yet to find means to recycle the pods or containers. As of now, though the pods are biodegradable, you know that they will be sitting in landfills for a long time; whereas coffee grounds can be used as fertilizers for your garden.
Traditional vs. One Cup Coffee Makers: Cost
A good coffee maker for pods can retail starting at around $100. While you can get a good traditional coffee maker for less than a $100, to get really good coffee, you also need a grinder and other gadgets like a steaming wand and frothing pot if you like lattes and cappuccinos.
If you have the resources as well as the time to invest in really good coffee machines (brewer, grinder etc) and you want the flexibility of being able to control the taste of your coffee, then you are better suited to traditional coffee. Traditional methods of brewing are also recommended for heavy drinkers.
But if you want convenience and consistent results, using coffee maker for pods may just be perfect for you. Also, if you are not a heavy drinker, pods will work perfectly for you because you need not waste pots of coffee.
Our recommendation? If you are a coffee enthusiast, it’s nice to have both types of machines in the house.
